Choosing your stone

Every material has trade-offs. Here's a plain comparison to help you narrow it down before you visit a showroom.

Granite

Natural stone quarried in solid blocks. Every slab is different.

Good for
Kitchens, bars, outdoor kitchens and anywhere that sees heat and heavy use.
Watch out for
Needs sealing. Pattern varies slab to slab, so pick your actual slab.
Care
Mild soap and water. Reseal as recommended for your stone.

Quartz

Engineered stone made from crushed quartz and resin. Consistent color and pattern.

Good for
Busy kitchens, vanities and bars where you want low maintenance and a uniform look.
Watch out for
Hot pans can scorch the resin, so use trivets. Not for outdoor use.
Care
Soap and water. No sealing needed.

Quartzite

Natural stone that looks like marble but is much harder.

Good for
People who want the look of marble with more durability.
Watch out for
Some stones sold as quartzite are softer. Ask us before you commit to a slab.
Care
Seal like granite. Soap and water for daily cleaning.

Marble

Classic natural stone with soft veining. Softer than granite.

Good for
Vanities, fireplaces, and bakers who want a cool surface for pastry.
Watch out for
Acids like lemon juice and wine etch the surface. Expect it to age and patina.
Care
Wipe spills quickly, use cutting boards, and seal regularly.

Limestone

Soft natural stone with a quiet, matte look.

Good for
Fireplace surrounds, accents and low-traffic areas.
Watch out for
Stains and scratches more easily than granite or quartz.
Care
Seal well and clean with stone-safe products.

How picking your slab works

Natural stone varies from slab to slab, so you choose your actual slab in person. Our distributors in the Milwaukee area have showrooms with hundreds of full slabs on display.

Tell us what you're looking for and we'll point you to the right showroom. When you find a slab you like, the showroom sends your selection to us and we confirm your price.

Working with a smaller project? A remnant from our shop may be all you need.
